Your child's class is 40 minutes long. Please treat Art like you would any other subject! DO NOT have your child dressed in their best clothes. Smocks are available for students if needed. Children will get dirty! Art is messy! That is part of being a child, and it is FUN!
At the beginning of each year we, students in every class and I, come up with rules of the room. As their teacher it is my priority to let the kids have fun in an environment that is comfortable, safe, and inspiring, We cover things like: proper use of materials, proper etiquette when speaking about their work, as well as other students work, (critiquing)what it sounds like in an artist studio, what it looks like, expected behavior on the carpet where we learn, expected behavior while out at tables working. We work under the assumption there are no mistakes in Art. I challenge them to see what they can do with what they think is a "mistake". Students must learn how to think creatively to solve their solutions. They are learning not only to persevere, but life lessons that are not instant gratification. We are gradually transferring our space into a TAB environment. (Teaching Artist Behavior) This gives students more choice, a voice, and learning what it takes to become an artist.
